Today, herbal supplements are finding more acceptance in mainstream Western medicine as Western-trained doctors are discovering the health benefits of many natural and herbal substances for overall health. Some herbal and natural remedies are helpful for common problems like high cholesterol. If you take conventional drugs to lower cholesterol, you should discuss the possibility of herbal supplementation with your doctor before trying any herbs, to rule out any interactions between the herbs and your medication.
Herbs for High Cholesterol
Herb Supplements
Garlic is one of the most commonly used natural substances for lowering cholesterol levels. Some clinical studies have shown that garlic can decrease total cholesterol levels by a few percentage points, and with cholesterol, every little bit helps. Garlic may be consumed as part of the regular diet, or in supplement form. While garlic is a natural way to help lower cholesterol, it shouldn't be used in conjunction with blood thinning drugs like Coumadin.
Red yeast rice is another natural food that has been found to lower cholesterol levels, as is Guggulipid, which is gum resin from the mukul myrrh tree. This has been used in India for reduction of both total cholesterol and LDL (sometimes called "bad" cholesterol) levels. Some of the other herbal products that have been traditionally used for lowering cholesterol include ginger, rosemary, turmeric, artichoke leaf extract, holy basil, yarrow, and seeds and leaves of the fenugreek plant.
Herbs for PMS
Premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, is another medical condition that can be treated with herbal supplements. For example, the Chaste tree berry has been used for over 2,500 years in treating PMS. This herb is used to help with depression, breast tenderness, and headaches associated with approaching menstruation. Black cohosh is often used in conjunction with Chaste tree berry for PMS, and evening primrose oil is another popular herbal remedy. Evening primrose oil is high in gamma linoleic acid, and aids in reducing premenstrual breast tenderness.
Herbs for Headaches
Migraine headaches can also sometimes be relieved through herbal remedies, which are designed to address blood vessel dilation that causes these headaches. Chamomile, dandelion root, and ginkgo biloba are three common herbal remedies for migraines and other types of headaches. Rosemary, with its antioxidant properties is also beneficial for headache sufferers, as is yucca root, which is also used for the pain of arthritis.
These are just a few of the common health conditions that can be addressed with herbal supplements, either alone, or sometimes in conjunction with traditional Western drugs. Western medicine is taking another look at herbal remedies and is starting to come around to their usefulness.
